Intel® VTune™ Amplifier provides a Getting Started page with the links to installed resources like Tutorials using a variety of tuning scenarios for sample applications and links to documentation resources available on the web. You can access this page through the Help menu or Getting Stared link on the Welcome page of the standalone product version.

Note

This topic describes different options to get documentation support for the VTune Amplifier in any Intel Studio. Note that Visual Studio IDE integration is available only for the VTune Amplifier XE, part of Intel Parallel Studio XE and Intel Cluster Studio XE.

For the VTune Amplifier XE integrated into the Visual Studio user interface, select Help> Intel VTune Amplifier <version>> Getting Started with Intel VTune Amplifier <version>.

For the standalone user interface of the VTune Amplifier, Getting Started page is available via Help > Getting Started with Intel VTune Amplifier <version> menu or via the toolbar button.

Browsing Help

To view help in the standalone user interface, select Help > Intel VTune Amplifier <version> Help from the menu.

For the VTune Amplifier XE only: In the Visual Studio IDE, you can browse and search for topics in different ways:

  • Select Help > Intel VTune Amplifier <version> > Intel VTune Amplifier <version> Help to view full-scale help for the VTune Amplifier.

  • Use Help> Contents/Index/Search to open the native Visual Studio help viewer and access the VTune Amplifier chapter that provides a high-level overview information on the product.

Locating Intel Topics in the Visual Studio Help Viewer (for the VTune Amplifier XE only)

To filter the documentation so that only the Intel documentation appears, select Help> Contents from the Visual Studio user interface. In the Filtered by: drop-down list, select Intel.

To determine where the currently displayed topic appears in the table of contents (TOC), click the Sync with Table of Contents button on the Visual Studio toolbar to highlight the topic in the Contents pane.

Browsing Reference for Processor Events

VTune Amplifier documentation includes Reference for Intel processor events. To access the Reference for a particular Intel processor/microarchitecture, select Help > Intel Processor Event Reference landing page in the standalone user interface and choose the required microarchitecture/processor. To access the Event Reference from Visual Studio, select Help > Intel VTune Amplifier <version> > Intel Processor Event Reference .

Activating Intel Search Filters in the Document Explorer (for the VTune Amplifier XE only)

With Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, you can include Intel documentation in all search results by checking the Intel search filter box for the Language, Technology, and Content Type categories. You must check the Intel search box for all three categories to include Intel documentation in your searches. Unchecking all three Intel search boxes excludes Intel documentation from search results. The Intel search filters work in combination with other search options for each category.

Using Context-Sensitive Help

Context-sensitive help enables easy access to help topics on active GUI elements. The following context-sensitive help features are available on a product-specific basis:

  • F1 Help: Press F1 to get help for an active dialog box, property page, pane, or window.

  • What's This Column: In the grid, right-click a performance metric column and select the What's This Column entry from the context menu to open a help topic for this particular metric. You can also view a lightweight metric description in the pop-up window when hovering over the column name.

  • ? Help: In Visual Studio, click the ? button, in the upper-right corner of the dialog box or pane to get help for the dialog box or pane.

  • Dynamic Help: In Visual Studio 2008, select Help > Dynamic Help to open the Dynamic Help window, which displays links to relevant help topics for the current window.
