Using the Menu Items and Toolbars

After you launch the Microsoft Visual Studio* or Intel® Advisor GUI environment and choose your target, you can begin the process of using the Intel Advisor tools to help you add parallelism into parts of your program.

To launch the Survey, Suitability, or Correctness analysis tools, use one of the following:

  • In the Visual Studio Tools menu or the Solution or Project context menu, click Intel Advisor XE 2015 and choose the desired action:

  • In the Intel Advisor GUI, click File>New and choose the desired action:


    File > New menu choices

  • In the Intel Advisor toolbar, select the desired action by clicking the appropriate icon:

In Visual Studio 2012 or 2013, click to display a drop-down list:

In the upper-right of each Report window, click the Hide side command toolbar or Show side command toolbar buttons to show or hide the side command toolbar. This toolbar has additional buttons not available elsewhere, which can be helpful for analyzing large target executables. Hiding the command toolbar increases the width available to view the tool's Report data.

To display the installed help or the Getting Started page, or view online videos or articles, click the or icon on the Intel Advisor toolbar. The Getting Started page introduces the Intel Advisor and provides links to the installed tutorials, documentation, and online internet resources.

Display the Advisor Workflow tab, which guides you through the workflow steps and allows you to launch the Intel Advisor tools and reports. When using Visual Studio, the Advisor Workflow appears in the same frame as the Solution Explorer.

In Visual Studio, Click Tools> Intel Advisor XE 2015> Open Advisor Workflow, or click View> Intel Advisor XE 2015> Open Advisor Workflow

In the product GUI, click File> View> Open Advisor Workflow

Is already displayed.

Click the icon (if available) in the Intel Advisor toolbar.

Run the Survey tool with your application (target) to profile it to locate hotspots.

In Visual Studio, click Tools> Intel Advisor XE 2015> Start Survey Analysis

In the product GUI, click File> New> Start Survey Analysis

Click the Collect Survey Data button below 1. Survey Target.

Click in the Intel Advisor toolbar, or click the or Start analysis with data collection paused button in the Survey Report window's command toolbar. If you click Start analysis with data collection paused, the button appears.

Run the Suitability tool with your application to predict its approximate parallel performance. Before running this tool, add source annotations to define at least one parallel site and task(s) within each site.

In Visual Studio, click Tools> Intel Advisor XE 2015> Start Suitability Analysis

In the product GUI, click File> New> Start Suitability Analysis

Click the Collect Suitability Data button below 3. Check Suitability.

Click in the Intel Advisor toolbar, or click the or Start analysis with data collection paused button in the Suitability Report window's command toolbar. If you click Start analysis with data collection paused, the button appears.

Run the Correctness tool with your application to predict its potential data sharing problems. Before running this tool, add source annotations to define at least one parallel site and task(s) within each site.

In Visual Studio, click Tools> Intel Advisor XE 2015> Start Correctness Analysis

In the product GUI, click File> New> Start Correctness Analysis

Click the Collect Correctness Data button below 4. Check Correctness.

Click in the Intel Advisor toolbar, or click the button in the Correctness Report window's command toolbar.

Open the Project Properties dialog to view and modify project properties.

In Visual Studio, click Tools> Intel Advisor XE 2015> Display project propertiesOpen Project Properties

In the product GUI, click File> Project Properties...

Click Display project properties (if available) in the Intel Advisor toolbar

Open the Annotation Report window to view annotations

In Visual Studio, click View> Intel Advisor XE 2015> Open Annotation Report

Click the View Annotations button below 2. Annotate Sources.

Open the Summary window to view a high-level summary of your parallel sites

In Visual Studio, click View> Intel Advisor XE 2015> Open Summary

In the product GUI, click File> View> Open Summary

Click the View Summary button below 5. Add Parallel Framework.

Click (or Intel Advisor icon in Visual Studio 2010) in the Intel Advisor toolbar.

In the Intel Advisor product GUI, open or close the Project navigator

In the product GUI, click View> Project Navigator

Click in the Intel Advisor toolbar.

In the product GUI, create a new project.

In the product GUI, click File> New> Project...

Click in the Intel Advisor toolbar.

In the product GUI, open an existing project.

In the product GUI, choose either:

  • File> Recent Projects> name
  • File> Open> Project...

Click the button in the Intel Advisor toolbar.

Temporarily stop data collection while the target continues to run.

Click the button in the Survey Report, Suitability Report, or Correctness Report command toolbar.

Resume data collection that you previously paused or that was started as paused.

Click the button in the command toolbar.

Stop target execution and data collection, and display the result collected thus far. This button is enabled when the collection is in progress.

Click the button in the Survey Report, Suitability Report, or Correctness Report window's command toolbar.

Cancel the target execution and data collection. Discards the data collected so far. This button is enabled when the collection is in progress.

Click the button in the Survey Report, Suitability Report, or Correctness Report window's command toolbar.

Cancel data finalization. Retains the data collected. This button is enabled when data finalization is in progress.
