We are now very happy to announce that the Intel® RealSense™ SDK (Beta) is now available for public download.
If you just go to the main RealSense page: http://software.intel.com/realsense you will see the link to "Download the SDK" prominently at the top of the page:

Here is the DIRECT link, if you can't wait to get to it:
http://registrationcenter-download.intel.com/akdlm/irc_nas/4618/intel_rs_sdk_offline_package_r_2.0.30.73832.exe
(but that link may get dated, so just go back to the main-page if the above link doesn't work)
But, as you notice above, the other prominent button is to "Reserve your Dev Kit" => http://click.intel.com/intelr-realsensetm-developer-kit.html
This is important because, while you can download & install the SDK, you can't really do a lot of testing without the required Intel RealSense 3D camera. For now, we are collecting inputs to see how many people actually have an interest in paying about $99. So, if you're one of those folks, please click the above link to get on the list.
Beyond that, in support of the program, we've set up Forum for those folks that have downloaded & installed the SDK as well as those that may have been able to get one of the early cameras. You can get to the forum here: https://software.intel.com/forums/realsense (it is already live and active).
Which brings up perhaps one of the two most common questions:
- Will the Intel RealSense SDK work with last year's Intel Perceptual Computing Camera?
The short answer is: No. The longer answer is, while Perceptual Computing is similar in concept to Intel RealSense technology, the newer system & software is a significant improvement over last year's solution. As such, while backwards compatibility is always "good" - given that Perceptual Computing had a VERY limited distribution, we wanted to make sure that the moving forward solution (Intel RealSense technology) was as capable as possible since it will soon be a "mainstream" feature shipping in many systems from multiple OEMs in the coming months. So, the decision was made consciously to place the "greatness of the future" at a much higher priority to support the thousands of Perceptual Computing cameras shipped last year. So, the new RealSense 3D cameras and associated SDKs will be of a much higher resolution and much broader list of capabilities that last year's technology.
- Will the Intel RealSense SDK support the new Dell Venue 8 (7000 series) that was shown at the IDF Keynote?
The short answer is: No, not yet. The longer answer is that we do fully intend to roll all versions of Intel RealSense technology (the ones that use IR-sensors and the ones that use multiple RGB cameras) into a single SDK download that will allow developers to write code for all platforms.
With that, I'll close up this blog, but, if you want more information about the release, please have a peek at our Chipshot about the launch!
